Strict compliance to the tobacco control program was given emphasis in a health webinar held on June 30.
Nurse Aim Santander, one of the webinar facilitators defined the role of schools in the anti– tobacco campaign.
“Let’s intensify our campaign against tobacco products. Schools must be vigilant because there are lot of mini-stores selling tobacco products to our learners,” Santander said.
Santander also pointed out that tobacco dependence is a form disease. Second hand smoking exposes people to 4,000 chemicals inhaled, and it triggers heart attack.
The effects of tobacco needs to be integrated in the curriculum, Nurse Santander further said.
Meanwhile, part of the tobacco control program in schools is the creation of a task force that will implement strict policies regarding cigarette use.
The task force is composed of parents (PTA), guidance counselors, child protection committee, and learners.
“It is important that we develop good habits among children, by explaining the long-term consequences of smoking, the nurse commented.
She also highlighted that schools should ban tobacco industry’s advertisements/ donations.
