STO CRISTO GYMNASIUM, Dasmariñas City – Error-stricken Quezon sepaktakraw men’s secondary team slumped to its fourth-place finish and missed a chance for bronze medal in the hands of Batangas Kickers who capped off a synchronized campaign dominating decisive actions, including a one-sided finale in the 3rd regu, April 15.
Mendoza, the Batangas front-liner fired a game-high 13-of 21 points via bicycle and cartwheel attacks, Arpia chipped in 5 hits, while Aclan converted his head attacks to 3 points in the game’s third regulation which also served as the decider or turning point.
Quezon’s Mark Bunsol succumbed the team’s hope for bronze after sulking into unforced errors both in the defensive and offensive departments while Batangas enjoyed a 4-0 run converting the chart to 5-1 in the early 2nd set salvo of the third regu.
Meanwhile, the combined tempo of Isiah Cabrera and Ronel Marquez was on point eking out a 6-0 run turning the tables to 7-7 deadlock.
Cabrera exchanged Batangas into a 2-2 rally to deadlock the scores once more, 9-9 before Cabrera committed a service error, 10-9. Mendoza of Batangas unleashed his leg power to advance a 5-0 run converting the chart to 15-9 before Marquez unlocked the key to find a booming trey for 2 points, 15-11.
Coach Julius Ivan Milagrosa called for a time out to fix Quezon’s floor defense. The strategy worked for a time, 15-12 until Mendoza found the sideway blitz to deny Quezon once again and chipped in a 4-0 run, 19-12.
Quezon’s tekong Isiah Cabrera notched 2 points apiece, 19-14 but Batangas pulled all the stops nailing another two points to end the set, 21-14.
Quezon Booters had a chance to stay on track for bronze in the second regu after recovering from the heels of a massive upset in the first regu. The trio of Conrad Vinzel De Luna, Jerick De Villa,
Darren Mote and the sub-player Mark Steven Mercado twisted the fate and pounded Batangas into submission in dominating 21-16; 21-15 two-set sweep.
But fate seemed to favor the opponent as the game ended with Batangas winning 2-of-3 game’s regulation.
The scores: 21-13; 21-14 (1st regu); 16-21; 15-21 (2nd regu); 21-9; 21-14 (3rd regu).
