DASMARIÑAS CITY – Quezon volley belles fell short of guns and failed to secure an automatic slot for the final four of women’s volleyball secondary after Lipa City Angels took a sweep in a commanding 25-7, 25-16 advantage during the winner-to-winner duel at the De La Sale University Gymnasium, April 2.
Both teams leaned on a 2-0 win-loss card before Lipa tainted Quezon’s standing at 2-1 while the former remained unscathed at 3-0 card to seal a slot in the top 4 qualifiers for the finals set next week.
For the loss, Quezon will face Rizal in the next game to stay on track in the hunt for a magic four spot for the 2023 Regional Athletic Association Meet (RAAM) volleyball finals.
Mary Angelique Hinete led Quezon volley belles to exciting decisive tidbits on the spiking and blocking blitz against taller Lipa City Angels’ outside spikers Dimaano (7) and Ramirez (10); but Hinete’s ammunition wasn’t enough to stop the opponents’ “height is might dominion.”
With a shaky floor defense, Quezon volley belles suffered setbacks in the drop balls and placings courtesy of Lipa’s Caringal (11) and Abelardo (9). Lipa enjoyed an early lemon time at 7-4 chart until Hinete released a kill to claim a booming service for teammate Lisna Jamie Hombre.
Not long after Hombre’s service ace, 7-5, Dimaano once again turned the wheel in Lipa’s favor via outside attacks mounting a 7-0 run converting the score to 14-4, a 10-point advantage in the first set.
Coach Wimmie Adolfo called for a timeout to elevate the game plan for Quezon, but Dimaano and Abelardo’s blended hit-and-kill weapon nailed Quezon at the score of 4 as Lipa galvanized a 5-0 run as the set resumed. The tandem eclipsed a 19-4 lead, too far for Quezon to chase.
Dimaano closed the first set in Lipa’s favor at 25-7 adding damages to Quezon’s already contrite game plan and composure.
“Height is might po talaga. No amount of tough training can beat the height advantage that we see among Lipa Angels,” Quezon’s trainer John Emmanuel Landicho admitted.
As usual, Lipa Angels propelled an early lead in the second set, 12-6; but Hinete’s wallop converted a 12-7 chart gunning for a 3-0 run, closing the score at 12-10 and engaging Lipa in long rallies.
Dimaano ended the rally giving Lipa a 13-10 lead, then bombed straight 6 runs via service aces and unforced errors committed by Quezon volley belles, 19-10.
Dimaano also ushered Lipa to a set-point, 24-16 then to the second set’s conclusion, 25-16 when Quezon volley belle, Mikhaela Janiel Lavaro’s dig missed to cross the net and landed along the sideline.
“Luamaban naman ang mga bata, but Lipa’s skills are more than enough for them to deal with. Lipa’s positions, offense and defense are on point plus the height talaga,” Landicho, Quezon trainer remarked.
