Battling her mood to participate in today’s game and sluggish to go off bed early morning, Dolphin SPED sprinter won her first gold in the 200m title in breathtaking fashion on Saturday, contributing another sprint medal sweep at the 2023 Regional Athletic Association Meet Finals.
Irish B. Llanes, 15, a deaf and mute student from Atimonan Central Elementary School stormed out of the blocks and dominated the race from the start, demolishing the competition as she raced around the bend and sped down the straight in 33.91 seconds, improving on her own school record.
“Mahusay po siya, talagang sya po ang mataas ang porsyento na manalo kaya medyo nag-alala ako nung pahirapan kami kaninang umaga.” Amparo Saavedra - first-time coach, said in a phone interview.
“Senyas, senyas lang po na may kasama na ring lundag ang ginawa ko kanina habang tumatakbo siya” Amparo added with sign language as Irish listens beside her. “Kita po sa facial expression nya na kahit wala siya sa mood ay masaya sya sa nagging result ng laban niya”
The umpires announced the winning time as a championship record as Irish, not on her mood, turned and walked over to the field down spirited.
Seconds later, Irish led at the halfway point and exploded through the finish, with compatriots Irish Camille Urriza of Laguna Province (33.95) and Khriscel Anne Dela Cruz of Cavite Province (34.32) battling out of the turn and down the straight for silver and bronze.
Irish, together with her teammates Ayezha Ryza, Nadine M. Amparo, Kisses C. Carias, and Ruby Lyn N. Ogayon also had won bronze medal coming from the 4x100m relay.
With this podium finish, Coach Amparo couldn't be "more proud" of Irish who now waits for the official announcement as Palarong Pambansa qualifier. (by Randall M. Dimaculngan/ photos by Amparo Saavedra. )
