Woodpushers Valerie De Los Reyes of Unit III and Reign Justine Oliveros of Unit IV silenced chess rivals as they leaned on Sicilian defense to wound up a score of 4 and 4.5 points respectively and clinch the gold medals in the Secondary Boys and Girls Chess Finals during the Palarong Quezon 2023 at the Quezon NHS Library.
De Los Reyes and Oliveros hacked out four victories respectively in their Palaro campaign to etch their first-ever Regionals berth.
“Mason variation and Sicilian defense lang po talaga ang tactic na ginawa hanggang ma-checkmate ko ang kalaban,” De Los Reyes said.
Meanwhile, Grade 12 Oliveros made sure that his outing this year will be a swan song as he makes sure to seal a spot to compete in the regional competition.
“Before the pandemic, nakaabot ako ng Finals pero hindi po ako nanalo, kaya meaningful po sa akin itong panalo ko na ito,” Oliveros exclaimed.
On the other hand, Maurene Geronimo of Unit II and Elisa Macalalad of Unit IV captured the silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the Men’s division, Jeroniel Perez of Unit II and Stephen Zane Quinto of Unit I joined Oliveros in a podium finish for the silver and bronze medals.
