LUCENA CITY – Coming off a sluggish campaign, Unit II managed to bounce back in the last round of the tournament as they snuffed Unit I’s twice-to-beat advantage as John Joel Jasmin and Lianjo Remiendo combine for a game-high 17 kills to hack out a 3-1 victory in the Men’s Volleyball Finals during the Palarong Quezon at the QNHS Gymnasium, March 6.
Unit II took advantage of Unit I’s whopping 11 unforced errors in the campaign from outside calls, net violations that resulted to 17-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 victory.
Unit II cruised to a hot start as Jasmin hit 2 spikes off a quick set of Remiendo to establish a 3-0 capital, however Unit I recovered their rhythm as they punctuated series of drop balls and kills to turn things around to 7-4.
Middle blocker Tim Tarrega crumbled Unit I’s offensive momentum as he posted five blocks highlighted by a joust against Unit I outside hitter Jay Vincent Macanang.
Unit I retaliated in the second set as they survive an early meltdown through the attacks made by opposite hitter TJ De Jesus who registered 3 kills to extend the rally to 11-8.
Holding to 9-8 lead, Unit I stunned Unit II as Macanang drew a service ace to etch a 10-8 set point in the second frame but Unit II managed to pull away to a 25-18 finish in the second set.
Trailing 8-4 in the third set, Unit II lead by Jasmin stormed back and tied the rally to 8-8, with 3 cross-court spikes and 1 block.
Unit I failed to execute defensive stops as they recorded 3 errors from net violations and service faults.
Unit II held on to their top billing as power duo Jasmin and Tarrega recorded 4 kills combined in the third set supported by 5 excellent sets of Remiendo.
Unit II negated Macanang’s 11 attacks and 5 blocks as they forced errors in the part of the Maubanins. (Alvin F. Patal, Quezon NHS)
