About 60 scholars of the provincial governor Hon. Helen Tan and 25 key teachers of Reading and Numeracy from the 12 select schools received upskilling on beginning reading instruction and basic numeracy skills during the Capacity Building Program for Scholars and Teachers for Project KID BIBO pilot implementation.
The Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) KID BIBO’s key players EPS Maria Dylin Gracia, EPS Celestina Alba, EPS Joseph Jarasa, and EPS Abner Pureza (who was in Cagayan de Oro for the NSPC) led the activity which was held at the Paaralang Elementarya ng Lucban, Lucan District on July 18-21.
Education Program Supervisor in Filipino Mr. Joseph E. Jarasa served as the first trainer on the first day; he dealt with the Science of Reading and How the Brain Works in Reading. Learnings underscored that learning to talk is a natural process among children, but learning to read is not. So, it must be taught explicitly.
“Children must understand the many sounds of spoken language and be able to connect these sounds to written letters in order to construct meaning from print,” EPS Jarasa added.
Violeta E. Reyes, MT-II, Atimonan District discussed the instructional strategies that will help students develop a love for reading. She presented these strategies using the Interactive Model of Reading Comprehension and a Language-Based Model of the Reading Process.
Relatively, Dr. Celestina M. Alba, Education Program Supervisor of Mathematics shared the fundamental concepts of Mathematics, emphasizing its importance as the cornerstone of problem-solving and critical thinking. Dr Alba stressed the significance of Mathematics as a foundational subject that paves the way for a child's academic journey and overall cognitive development.
In the same event, Malou M. De Ramos led the discussion on phonemic awareness in Filipino focusing on how to simplify instruction. The next speaker Nimpha L. Reyes, Principal II from Sariaya presented phonemic awareness in English and shared strategies on how to utilize instructional materials that consistently relate to reading achievement.
Evangeline P. Atienza, Master Teacher 1 of Candelaria East District talked about the Filipino Phonics Instructions while Grace Urbien-Salvatus, Principal II of Mulanay District II, tackled English phonics instruction.
In the same event, Annalyn B. Tabas, Master Teacher I of Candelaria West District discussed the Foundational Mathematics and fun-filled lessons for Grade 1; while Maricris V. Capio, Teacher III of Malicboy East ES shared fun-filled lessons for Grade 2; Lanny V. Luzon MT-II of Candelaria West District took charge of the for Grade 3 Math fun-filled lessons; and Odessa B. Manguiat, SSHT VI in Mathematics from Recto MNHS discussed Foundational Mathematics and fun-filled Lessons for Grade 7.
KID BIBO which means Kabataang Quezonian tungo sa Isang Direksiyon: pagBasa’t pagbilang ay Isusulong sa, sa Bawat Oportunidad probinsya at DepEd ay magkatulong, is partnership project between the provincial government of Quezon and DepEd aiming to improve the literacy and numeracy rate among Quezonian learners.
