Realizing the significant impact of the Barkada Kontra Droga (BKD) student organization to learners, as mandated in the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Regulation No. 5, s. 2007 entitled Institutionalizing the BKD Program, the Quezon Drug Abuse Prevention Advocates (QueDAPA) managed and supervised under the School Governance and Operations Division – Youth Formation Unit conducted its online capacity building for BKD teacher-advisers, entitled Securing Hands-on Advisership for Reliable Program Implementation (SHARP), February 28. BKD Teacher-Advisers in all secondary schools joined the virtual event. The training was presented with in-demand topics by the resource speakers namely: Mr. Juniel Arvin U. Doloque, Project Development Officer II of the Bureau of Learner Support Services – Youth Formation Division; Mr. Genesis E. Olarte, Nurse II of the School Health Section; Hon. Rolden C. Garcia, Sangguniang Kabataan Chairperson of Brgy. Ibabang Dupay, Lucena City; and Ms. Maria Genaline C. Villamena, Master Teacher II of Lusacan National High School. Ms. Mark Angelo “Margel” M. Tiusan, Project Development Officer I, began the virtual training with the background and objectives of the program and also shared the previous accomplishments and on-going activities for the BKD in the Division. Mr. Doloque elaborated the legal bases and phases of the BKD program and the current activities spearheaded by the Central Office. He also clarified the difference, scope and limitations between the BKD and the National Drug Education Program (NDEP). Mr. Olarte reiterated on the legal bases, implementation, and best practices of the NDEP in the Division and field counterparts under the management of school health. Hon. Garcia introduced to the participants the Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo (KKDAT), as the elected National President, and its Projects, Programs and Activities (PPAs) in the barangay, municipal, city, provincial, regional and national levels of governance. Ms. Villamena, Division awardee for Best BKD implementer and adviser, shared her former experiences and school-based practices for the said program when she was still the coordinator in Lutucan Integrated National High School. The event ended with the teacher-advisers equipped with the knowledge and skills in raising the bar of students’ awareness of the cause and effects of involvement in drug-related activities. Strengthening further the program, the students are expected to incorporate refusal skills that will help them to strongly say no to harmful activities and enforce them instead to be involved in meaningful activities that will develop their skills and talents and achieve what is expected of them at their age.
